The best neighborhoods and accommodations in Rome

Rome is full of fascinating history, stunning architecture and a vibrant atmosphere. But where should you stay to make the most of your time here? In this blog post, we’ll show you the best areas and accommodation types to help you find the perfect place for you!
Rome is extremely popular with tourists, so there are plenty of accommodation options to choose from. In my opinion, there is no single “best” area to stay in, so it’s worth choosing the one that best suits your interests and activities.
If you are looking for cheaper accommodation and proximity to trains and buses is important to you, then it is worth looking around the Termini train station . However, be aware that you will be further from the sights and Vatican City. Bed & Breakfasts are an excellent option if you are looking for comfortable and affordable accommodation, and they are very common in the city!
If you're looking for a luxury hotel experience, try the Via Veneto area near Villa Borghese . This is where the most expensive and classy hotels in Rome are located!
And if you want to stay close to the Vatican , I recommend the Prati district , which is a quiet residential area just a few minutes' walk from the Holy City.
1. Centro Storico – In the heart of history
If you're visiting Rome for the first time and want to be close to the city's iconic landmarks, the Centro Storico is the best choice. It's also home to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the Trevi Fountain.
✅ Advantages : Central location, attractions within walking distance, plenty of restaurants and cafes.
❌ Disadvantages : Higher accommodation prices, bustling tourist crowds.
🛏 Recommended accommodations :
Palazzo Navona – Right next to the Pantheon, with an elegant interior.
2. Trastevere – For lovers of the bohemian atmosphere
Trastevere is located across the Tiber River and is one of the most charming neighborhoods in Rome. Cobblestone streets, cozy trattorias, and a vibrant nightlife await you here.
✅ Advantages : Authentic Italian lifestyle, less touristy places, excellent restaurants.
❌ Cons : It's further away from some attractions, can be noisy at night.
🛏 Recommended accommodations :
VOI Donna Camilla Savelli Hotel – Located in a beautiful, historic monastery building.
3. Termini area – Cost-effective solution
The area around the main train station, Termini, can be a good choice for those looking for cheaper accommodation and easy transportation.
✅ Advantages : Excellent transportation, lower prices.
❌ Cons : Less cozy, some streets are not the safest at night.
🛏 Recommended accommodations :
The Hive Hotel – Modern, elegant hotel with a rooftop terrace.
Hotel Canada – Family-friendly accommodation in classic Roman style.
4. Prati – Near the Vatican
If you want to stay near the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica, the Prati district is a perfect choice. It's an elegant, quiet area, full of excellent restaurants and shopping.
✅ Advantages : Quieter, elegant neighborhood, close to the Vatican.
❌ Cons : It is further away from other attractions in the city.
🛏 Recommended accommodations :
Hotel Della Conciliazione – Classic and elegant hotel near St. Peter's Basilica.
Relais Vatican View – Stylish apartments next to the Vatican.
Which is the best choice?
If it's your first time in Rome and you want to be close to everything → Centro Storico
If you want a more authentic, bohemian atmosphere → Trastevere
If you are looking for a cost-effective solution → Termini area
If you want to stay near the Vatican → Prati
