Rome public transport


Rome's public transport system is well-developed and offers many options for exploring the city. Below I will summarize the most important things to know:


Metro network:

  • Lines: There are currently three metro lines in operation in Rome:

    • Line A (red): This line runs from the northwest to the southeast of the city and reaches important stops such as Termini Station, the Spanish Steps (Spagna) and Ottaviano Station near the Vatican.

    • Line B (blue): Runs north-south and provides access to landmarks such as the Colosseum (Colosseo stop) and Circus Maximus.

    • Line C (green): This is the newest line, serving mainly the eastern part of the city and is currently under expansion.

Ticket types and prices:

  • BIT (Integrated Time Ticket): It costs 1.50 euros and is valid for 100 minutes on buses, trams and one metro journey.

  • 24-hour ticket: For 7 euros, it provides unlimited travel for 24 hours from validation.

  • 48-hour ticket: for 12.50 euros, it allows unlimited travel for 48 hours.

  • 72-hour ticket: 18 euros for unlimited use for 72 hours.

  • Weekly pass (CIS): 24 euros for unlimited travel for one week.

Note: Ticket prices are indicative and may change over time.



Ticket purchase:

  • Vending machines: Tickets can be purchased with cash or credit card from ticket machines located at metro stations.

  • Newsstands and newsagents: Many newsstands and newsagents also sell public transport tickets.

  • Mobile apps: It is also possible to purchase tickets through certain mobile apps.


Important information:

  • Validation: Tickets must be validated before each journey at the metro entrance or at the validator devices on buses and trams.

  • Children's travel: Children up to 10 years old can travel for free if their companion has a valid ticket.

  • Timetables: Metros generally run from 5:30am to 11:30pm, and until 12:30am on Fridays and Saturdays. Bus and tram timetables vary, but usually run from 5:30am to midnight.

  • Night transport: Night bus services are also available, marked with the letter "N".
